Texas is an exceptional state for both upland and waterfowl hunting, offering diverse habitats that support a wide variety of game bird species. The vast landscapes range from the rolling prairies of the High Plains to the dense brush country of South Texas, creating ideal conditions for upland bird hunting. Popular spots for quail and pheasant hunting include the rolling fields of the Texas Panhandle, particularly around Lubbock and Amarillo, as well as the sprawling ranches and grasslands near San Angelo and Abilene. These areas are well-suited for sporting dogs, with plenty of open terrain for pointing and flushing breeds to work.

Waterfowl hunting in Texas is equally impressive, with the state being a major stopover on the Central Flyway for migratory birds. The coastal marshes, shallow bays, and freshwater lakes along the Gulf Coast, particularly near Houston, Galveston, and Corpus Christi, provide excellent habitat for ducks and geese. The Caddo Lake area near the Louisiana border and the vast wetlands of the Texas Gulf Coast are hotspots for hunters with retrievers.

Oklahoma offers some of the best upland and waterfowl hunting in the Midwest, especially for hunters using trained sporting dogs. Near towns like Woodward, Alva, and Enid, the rolling prairies and mixed grasslands create prime conditions for bobwhite quail and pheasant hunting, where pointers and flushers can cover ground efficiently to locate coveys. For waterfowl enthusiasts, areas around Tulsa, McAlester, and Eufaula provide top-tier access to ducks and geese along major flyways, with retrievers playing a crucial role in navigating wetlands and retrieving birds in flooded timber and open water. Popular public lands like Packsaddle, Optima, and Eufaula Wildlife Management Areas offer hunters accessible, well-managed environments rich in bird populations. With its diverse habitat, long seasons, and a strong tradition of working dog use, Oklahoma stands out as a premier destination for upland and waterfowl hunting adventures.
